A Business Built on Connection: Why Community Matters More Than Sales

A Business Built on Connection: Why Community Matters More Than Sales

Jaime McKeever

There are seasons in business when you push.

Launch.
Promote.
Market.
Refine.

And then there are seasons when you pause.

This week, I’m choosing to pause — not because I don’t believe in what I make, but because I want to share something deeper than product.

I want to talk about community.

From Corporate to Community

For many years, I worked in corporate while raising young children. I did the structured giving. The company-wide volunteer days. The organized donation drives.

And while those things were good, they always felt somewhat removed from my everyday life.

Now that I run my own business, something has shifted.

I’m no longer separated from the impact.

I get to see it.

I get to participate in it.

I get to be part of it.

That’s something I don’t take lightly.

Finding The Support Network

This past year, I was approached by the team at the
Support Network of Madison — a local nonprofit serving Madison and surrounding communities.

Their mission is simple and powerful:
to create opportunities for connection and social support so that no one feels alone.

And if you know me — if you’ve followed my work — you know that connection and reflection are at the heart of everything I create.

Journaling isn’t just paper.
It’s a practice of grounding yourself.
Of being present.
Of belonging — first to yourself, and then to others.

So when the invitation came to be part of their nonprofit retail space, it felt aligned in a way I can’t quite describe.

I said yes.

The Joyful Shoppe

Through my business, I became part of The Joyful Shoppe — a nonprofit retail and gathering space that supports the mission of the Support Network.

It’s more than a store.

It’s a place where:

  • Local makers share their work
  • Neighbors run into neighbors
  • Events bring people together
  • Proceeds flow directly back into community programming

Every purchase made there supports initiatives designed to reduce isolation and strengthen community ties.

And that matters.

What It Has Meant to Me

Over the past year, my products have lived both in my online shop and on the shelves in Madison.

But what’s surprised me most isn’t the sales.

It’s the relationships.

I’ve:

  • Facilitated a journaling workshop there
  • Attended a lino-cut art event as a participant
  • Met fellow vendors who have become friends
  • Sent customers there during the holidays to shop intentionally and locally
  • Committed to working a few hours each month inside the space

Every time I walk in, I see someone I know.

There’s something incredibly grounding about that.

In a world that often feels noisy and fast, this space feels steady.

Why This Aligns With My Brand

My business has always been about more than paper goods.

It’s about:

  • Slowing down
  • Reflecting
  • Writing your way to well-being
  • Finding calm through creativity

Community is an extension of that.

Belonging is an extension of that.

You cannot separate personal well-being from communal well-being.

When people feel connected, they heal.
When people gather, they strengthen.
When people support one another, everyone rises.

That’s the spirit behind my journals.
And it’s the spirit behind being part of this nonprofit space.

The Vendors. The Volunteers. The Heart.

One of the most beautiful parts of The Joyful Shoppe is the people.

The volunteers who give their time.
The organizers who quietly keep everything running.
The makers who pour themselves into their craft.
The customers who choose to shop with intention.

It is hopeful.

And while I hope my work there contributes something meaningful, I already know how much it has given me.

It has deepened my roots here.

It has reminded me why I started.

It has shown me that business can be generous.

An Invitation

If you’re local, I’d love for you to stop by.

Explore the space.
Take a class.
Sit down and work for a bit.
Meet someone new.

You can learn more about the mission here:
https://www.supportnetworkofmadison.org/

And if you’re not local, know this:

When you support my work — whether online or in person — you’re supporting something that is connected to real community.

That’s something I’m incredibly proud of.

Thank you for being here.

You’re not just on an email list.

You’re part of this journey — of building something rooted in creativity, connection, and hope.

And that matters more to me than any single sale ever could.

With gratitude,
Jaime
